About Me

My carers really don’t know anything about my past unfortunatley. I was found on the carpark early one morning before the Sanctuary opened. Sadly it seems I was actually thrown over the fence in the night and I had been scared running around the carpark overnight, thankfully I didnt get out onto the busy road!

I was very scared, hiding out of sight when staff first arrived so I wasnt spotted until my carer went past me and heard growling and looked out the gates to see if there was a lost dog and then spotted me tucked into a corner.
Understandably I really was very scared and defensive and I didn’t trust anyone for sometime.

The Sanctuary put out appeals asking for any information from anyone who knew me to please get in touch, even if anonymously, to help give them information so they knew how best to care for me as it was hard to tell if I was just so scared and reactive due to being dumped or whether this was normal for me with new people, but sadly no one came forward.

Although I was very understandably defensive when I first came it became clear after some time that my behaviour issues were much deeper than just the fear and upset from my arrival. I had lots of serveral challenging behaviours which made caring for me safely quite tricky for my carers until they managed to build a strong relationship with me and help me through some of them.

My carers have put in a lot of time to building a relationship with me and I now feel comfortable with my primary carers and I have even made a new friend over the summer!! It takes me a long time to feel comfortable with new people by my carers have been working super hard to show me that new people aren’t as scary …. I’m still not convinced but I am trying my best and will have a sniff of them and I’m not too scared now as long as they dont try to touch me or come towards me!!

Due to my challenging behaviours I needed lot of behavior work, my carers here at the Sanctuary did tons of work and I got much better but I still really struggled with new people. I was finding living at the Sanctuary overwhelming at times with how busy it was, even though I was in a quieter space, the daily triggers of unfamiliar people prevented me from moving forward. So I was sent to a force free, positive reinforcement rehabilitation centre for a few months to help me make that next step as well as giving me a chance to decompress away from the repeat triggers that caused me upset. They continued the work my carers did and helped give me some tools to regulate myself when I felt overwhelmed. I still struggled when I came back to the Sanctuary but with patience, gentle encouragement and most improtantly time I have continued to improve and my carers say they are so so proud of the progress I have made!!!

Now I am finally ready to take the next step and find a special foster home that can continue my training, give me the support I need to adapt in a home and work with my carers so that one day when I am ready I can be adopted!!!
Read all about the home I am looking for below and my Behaviour and Health needs.

Home I am looking for…

  • Adopter with experince with dogs (bonus if they have experience with reactive dogs or dogs with behaviour issues but not necessary as my carers will be there to support my fosterer)

  • Adopter who is willing to follow my behaviour training & management

  • I need a Adult only quiet home with just me and my people/person with no regular visitors

  • I could potentially live with a gentle laid back dog friend that will give me space. I would need to be able to slowly build up being with another dog in the home so there would need to be seperate rooms/ large areas we can be in apart from eachother while we slowly build up time together over several weeks.

  • I need a home with no regular visitors and a secure safe space that I can be shut away from any visitors/ work persons.

  • To prevent distrupting my life at the Sanctuary anyone interested in me will have further checks and a home check done before being invited to meet me.

  • I need a secure garden in my new home (Fencing minimum 5ft)

  • I may need to be in foster for some time to allow me to settle in and build my training up over a long period of time. Anyone looking to foster me must be preppared to be able to foster me potentially until I find my adoptive home.

  • Because I need lots of regular meets with a fosterer to build a relationship and to be able to get the close support I need once in a foster home I need someone fairly local to the Sanctuary (15-20min drive away max)

Behaviour & Health

  • My carers have trained me to walk well with loose lead training and I must be kept on a short lead in public

  • My new adopters would need to continue using positive reinforcement training and following my management so I can live a happy life feeling safe

  • I need to build strong relationships to feel truly safe so I need multiple meets with potential adopters over a several weeks or longer.

  • Anyone wanting to adopt me must be willing to follow my training plan, keep me on lead and muzzled in busy spaces and at the vets.

  • I am not built the best and I have issues with my legs and have a skip when I walk, I am on daily pain relief medication to make sure I am comfortable.

  • Due to my intense behaviour I am on medications to help with my behaviour, I will need to continue these but the hope is over time once I am settled and with my training that I may be able to come off them if its right for me.

Things to Note

Flint is available to Foster

Fostering give dogs a chance to be in a home environment either while waiting for their forever home to come along or to give them a bit of respite from being in kennels.

Some dogs can find coming into kennels really stressful and do much better in a home environment. Sometimes we may have dogs in our care that have been or will be waiting in kennels longer for various reasons

We always assess any dogs that come into our care to help determine how they will cope in a kennel environment, find out all about them & their history and assess their behaviour. Based on our assessment we may look to place them in a foster home if we feel this would be better for them

We ideally look for a foster home that can care for them as long as needed to find their forever adoptive home, sometimes we may decide a shorter term foster home may be better to give them respite from kennels or just while they are in need of extra TLC.

Everything is always case by case as every animal and situation is different.
