My story so far…

I came into the sanctuary originally many years ago and was shortly after adopted out, however I got returned just before Christmas because my owner felt they could no longer cope with the behaviours I was exhibiting. I am a super happy-go-lucky boy here at the sanctuary and have been loving life! My carers want to try and find the perfect home to suit my needs the best. But if I don’t find one - I’ll just stay here where I’m happy!

I have been a victim of overindulgence in my previous home. My carers say I am built like a baked bean!! Rude!! I have been loving the exercise I’m getting here at the sanctuary so prospective owners must be willing to keep this up. All jokes aside, shifting some of this weight will help me become a healthier boy and will increase my life expectancy. What’s not to like?!

Home I am looking for…

I would suit an adult only home. I would not be able to be around any visiting children at all, due to my history and behaviours. I have bitten before and without effective management and persistence I could again, so my prospective owners need to follow management and training advice from my carers here at the sanctuary. As much as it pains me to say it, they really are quite knowledgeable and so they know how to make me happy!

I say a happy hello to some dogs out on walks, and could live with a dog pending a successful dog meet here at the sanctuary. Please note all dogs must be neutered, and vaccinated - and my carers will ask for proof of this before the meet. I am fairly calm and will happily potter around with other dogs. I do have crazy moments of play but I don’t appreciate that all of the time, so a calm dog that has playful moments would suit me best. Me and my best friend Mylo love to play together here at the Sanctuary and we can be adopted together. You can find more information on Mylo on the website. I would need to be separated from other dogs at feeding and treat times as I can guard what is mine.

I can live with dog friendly cats, as I have been cat tested here at the sanctuary and am totally respectful of their space. I would need to come and visit the home to check I get on with the cats there too. I can live with small animals as long as I would never have access to them (& as long as in doing so - it won’t compromise their welfare needs).

I don’t mind being left and often will just sleep, so I could be left up to 4 hours a day. I am used to being crated so would still like to have my own crate to sleep in as and when I want to. I should not be allowed up on the furniture due to being a resource guarder as this can cause further issues to arise.

Behaviour & Training

I can be quite a demanding boy occasionally. I like to woof to get what I want! I am learning though, and with the patience and training from my carers, I am doing very well.

I have bitten before, so need experienced owners that are happy to work towards managing any behaviours that need some work or issues that we encounter in the home. All of my bites have been in resource guarding scenarios. I can guard my toys, my food/treats and my bed so prospective owners must be willing to take my carers management advice to ensure another bite doesn’t arise again; my carers do believe it is avoidable. I can be a little bit cheeky and try to steal things that are on the floor, even if they are briefly dropped - and once they are mine - they are mine! My carers have been working on swaps & drops and the “wait” and “leave it” commands so that my resource guarding will be even more manageable. This is a work in progress - but I am super motivated by exciting toys and food, so I will get there.

Any adopters must be willing and financially prepared to work with a behaviourist, should they struggle with my behaviour in the home. My carer here at the sanctuary would also be happy to stay in touch with owners and help them through any issues they are experiencing.

I need to wear my muzzle for veterinary procedures. Positive associations with the muzzle must be kept up so that when I need my muzzle on, I don’t mind it. I have been very well behaved and not a grumble has come out of me when being at the vets here at the sanctuary when I’ve got my muzzle on.

I love going out for walks once I am out. I can sometimes get a little bit lazy so need some encouragement but once I get going, I love it!

Medical History…

As mentioned above, I am quite overweight. In 2024 I want to reach my goal and get my dream body! My carers are doing what they can at the moment (they call it diet and exercise, I call it boot camp!) but it would be a lot easier to get the weight off me in a home environment.

I do have a grade 3 heart murmur currently. This has thankfully improved from grade 6 which was years ago now. I have recently had a heart scan and the vet couldn’t see any major abnormalities. I need a heart check every 6 months to keep on top of this and ensure nothing worsens.

I have also previously had a nail bed infection which has thankfully all healed again now, thanks to my carers keeping it clean and dry for me.

Things to Note…

Any prospective owners would need to be willing to come to the sanctuary a lot and get to know me.

My Triggers…

- Resource guarding with my bowls, toys and bed
- Touch in sensitive areas; my hips and back legs

Owners need to be familiar with the following signals, which may indicate I am not happy or a bite is to follow:

- Freezes in my body and face
- Appeasement eyes
- Growling
- Appeasement licks

If you think you could offer me the home I need, please fill out an Adoption Enquiry Form. Please make sure you have read about all of my needs and our adoption policies before applying.
