Hi, I’m Neko

I’m a quiet boy who loves cuddles once I know you

  • Age - 4 years

  • Colour - Tabby/ white

  • Neutered - Yes

  • Vaccinated - Yes

  • Microchipped - Yes

  • FIV/FeLV blood tested- Yes (Negative)

  • Live with children - Older children 12+

  • Live with other cats - No

  • Live with dogs - Possibly a calm, friendly dog who has lived with cats before

  • Temperament - Can be wary and timid at first, but very friendly and affectionate once knows you.

  • Indoor-only or outdoor access? We do feel that Neko will choose to be an indoor cat due to his wary nature, he prefers to be close by to humans and know that he is safe. If Neko is adopted on his own, we feel he would be perfectly fine as an indoor only cat, however if adopted with his mom Lucky, then she will need the option of going outdoors if she chooses to. Neko may decide he would like to go on little adventures into their own garden too, although he may decide to stay indoors, so anyone adopting him will need to be happy with him being an indoor only cat if this is what he chooses.

My story so far…

Hi, my name is Neko. I arrived at the sanctuary with my beloved mommy Lucky, I am really hoping we can find a home together.

Sadly, we have been through a lot and it was quite a traumatic period of our lives before we arrived here at the sanctuary. It has taken us both a while to decompress and settle back into a life of happiness and calmness. My mommy soon settled and got used to the new people straight away, but I am a very sensitive boy so it took me a little longer. I can be wary around new people or in new environments, so my new adopters will need to understand that I will need time and patience while I get to know them. I will soon realise that you are not scary and can give me lots of cuddles and love, and then I won’t leave you alone!

Our human mommy passed away last year so we were taken in by her daughter while she tried to find rescue space for us. As there are so many cats at the moment needing help from rescues, it took a long time for rescue space to come up. We were on the sanctuary’s waiting list for months before they were finally able to take us in. Unfortunately, we were very stressed in the temporary home. There were young children who we were scared of, so we ended up living in just the one room. The humans didn’t have much time for us so we essentially were just fed and didn’t receive the care that we desperately needed. We also needed veterinary treatment but the humans couldn’t afford this, I especially was a very poorly boy when we arrived at the sanctuary.

As we were in a home and looked after, the sanctuary team thought that we were safe and cared for while waiting for space, but sadly this wasn’t the case. Although our family were trying their best, they just didn’t have the time or resources to give us what we needed.

Please see my ‘medical history’ below to read more about the treatment I received and the supplements I am on daily.

I am a very friendly boy who really, really loves attention, fuss and cuddles! As I said, I can be a bit scared of new people though, so sometimes it can take me a while to understand that you are not scary. This means that I do need a bit of time and patience to begin with, and like to get to know people at my own pace. Once I trust you, I will not leave you alone and will constantly be at your feet chatting away and asking for whatever it is that I want at the time. I have also been known to push my mommy out of the way so that I can get all of the tickles to myself…oops!

Home I am looking for…

I would love if my mommy and I can find a home together! I love her soooo much. I think I do annoy her a tiny bit sometimes as she tells me off, but I can’t help wanting to be close to her, she’s just my most favourite mommy ever! She helps me with my confidence and I will always follow her lead, she’s not scared of anything and is so brave, maybe I’ll be as brave as her one day?

However, if nobody wants to adopt both of us together, then we could be adopted separately. Our carer is really hoping we can find a home together though! It would be very weird and sad to have to do life without her, it would take a lot of getting used to.

We are looking for a nice quiet home, where there are no young children and we can have all the attention and love that we want.
We would prefer not to live with other cats as we aren’t too keen on them, although we have met some friendly dogs here at the sanctuary and are actually pretty chilled around them. I was a little wary, but could tell my mom wasn’t scared and this made me feel safe too, so I was actually a lot more confident around them than my carer expected. This means that we could happily live with a calm, friendly dog who has lived with cats before or is very used to them. We would not want to live with a very lively, boisterous dog though, as this would upset us.

We could live happily as mainly indoor cats. Due to my nervous nature, my carer thinks I would feel more comfortable staying inside my home, but I may decide to venture out to explore once I am fully settled and know my new family well. However, my mom Lucky is a bit more adventurous (nosey) so would like to have a garden to explore and sunbathe in. For this reason, we are looking for a home where we have the option of going outside if we choose to. We will need to be kept indoors for at least 8 weeks while we settle into our new home and get to know our new humans, I may need a bit longer.

I could also live as an indoor only cat (with no outdoor access) if adopted on my own.

After everything we have been through over the past year, we are just hoping to find a calm, loving home with humans who will give us the care and attention that we need. Hopefully, this can be together. Paws crossed!

Medical history…

When we arrived at the sanctuary, we were quickly booked into the vets as we were both extremely skinny, with very scabby skin and lots of fur loss. I was literally skin and bones and was quite weak, my carer says that she’s not sure I would have survived much longer and I came to the sanctuary to get the help I needed just in time. I was put onto steroids which really helped and I put on a little bit of weight. The vets didn’t want me to be on steroids long term so kept putting me on short courses of them, but each time I came off them, I would lose weight again. I was then put onto a slightly longer course in hopes that I would put on more weight. Meanwhile, my fur was growing back nicely and my sore, scabby skin had healed, so it was just the weight that I was struggling with, but I was still unbearably skinny. I had blood taken for tests and an abdominal scan done, but all of these tests came back clear and showed no causes of concern, and no reason for my weight loss. I was already on a sensitive bland diet due to diarrhoea in the home prior to coming to the sanctuary, although my carer now thinks that this was due to the food we were given there. The vets advised trying me on different sensitive foods, but these didn’t agree with me and gave me a poorly tummy. I was already on multiple meals throughout the day, as little and often meals helped me keep the weight on. Eventually, I was tried on a supplement rather than a different food and this seemed to really help. I was taken off the steroids and maintained my weight, my carer was so happy! I have been steadily putting on weight ever since and my carer says she is really pleased with me. I am now a very good weight. I am a big boy and could do with putting on a bit more as I am quite muscular too, but I am almost there. Rather than only gaining weight, it is now a case of keeping me moving and on a good diet to make sure I continue to regain and improve my muscle mass.

Firstly, I am still on a sensitive diet and it is advised that I be kept on this for the foreseeable future. Perhaps once I am properly settled into my home, I can be tried on a good quality hypo-allergenic food, but it is best for me to stay on the foods that we know work well for me for at least a few months after I go home, as my body is still recovering. I am currently eating Royal Canin gastrointestinal dry food, and gastro wet pouches too (although I like a mixture of the Royal Canin and Kattovit brands of these otherwise I get a bit bored!).

I am also on the following supplements daily, which are mixed into my food. Again, it is advised that I remain on these for at least the next few months while I settle into my new home.

  • Salmon oil- Has helped with my skin and coat, and also helps with my weight/ muscle gain.

  • Sustain- 1 sachet daily. Has helped to improve my digestive tract and my stools.

  • Zylkene- 1 capsule daily. Helps to keep me calm and my stress levels low.

My carer is happy to discuss my medical history with any potential adopters, so if you have any further questions, please send an email or call! I am on the road to being a healthy boy again and it’s just such a shame that everything we have been through had a massive effect on my health, both physically and mentally. I am doing really well, so please don’t be put off giving me a chance just because I am still recovering. I promise I will give you lots of love and cuddles in exchange for you letting me (and hopefully my mommy Lucky too) be a part of your family.

If you think you could offer me the home I need, please fill out an Adoption Enquiry Form. Please make sure you have read about all of my needs and our adoption policies before applying.

Forms lacking in detail or with questions unanswered may not be considered, we need to ensure we are matching our cats to the right home for them.
